American Oncology Institute (AOI) in Jalandhar Achieves Remarkable Success in Treating Breast Cancer with Innovative Neoadjuvant Therapy and Modified Radical Mastectomy

- 64-Year-Old Patient's Inspiring Journey to Remission Sets New Milestones in Comprehensive Breast Cancer Care -

Jalandhar, 25th Aug 2023: American Oncology Institute (AOI) Jalandhar in collaboration with Shrimann Super Specialty Hospital, successfully treats 64-year-old female suffering from Inflammatory ductal carcinoma - a type of breast cancer, graded as severe (grade 3). Mrs. Narinder Kaur, a postmenopausal woman with no significant underlying health conditions, faced a challenging journey when she presented with a swollen and ulcerated left breast six months ago. Her story of courage, combined with advanced medical treatment, showcases the strength of comprehensive and personalized Cancer Care.

Upon examination at AOI, Mrs. Kaur was found to have an ulcerative swelling with redness affecting her entire left breast, along with swollen lymph nodes in her armpit. The medical team at AOI initiated a groundbreaking treatment plan. She began a neoadjuvant therapy regimen, combining doublet targeted therapy along with chemotherapy. This dual approach was designed to target the cancer effectively from multiple angles. Under the specialized care of Dr. Burhan Wani and the dedicated team, the patient underwent the recommended treatment plan.

Dr. Burhan Wani, Senior Consultant, Medical Oncology at American Oncology Institute (AOI), Jalandhar, shared, "Personalized cancer Care play a crucial role in improving the prognosis of breast cancer. Over the past two decades, we've witnessed a substantial decline in breast cancer mortality, a success attributed to the early detection provided through screening mammography and the availability of improved treatment options.

Local-regional therapies such as surgery and radiation therapy hold vital roles. Additionally, post-surgery, adjuvant systemic therapies including chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and endocrine therapy are employed. Systemic therapy can also be given before surgery, termed neoadjuvant or preoperative therapy. This has traditionally been used for locally advanced and inflammatory breast cancer.

There are several advantages of neoadjuvant therapy. One of advantage is the ability to directly observe therapeutic efficacy when systemic therapy is given in the neoadjuvant setting; whereas there is no measurable disease to follow when therapy is given after surgery. Pathological complete response is now considered a surrogate indicator of survival in breast cancer. Another benefit in down staging the tumor to convert an inoperable breast cancer to a resectable one or convert from complete mastectomy to partial mastectomy and/or lumpectomy.”

After completing four cycles of neoadjuvant therapy, a follow-up PET CT scan revealed a remarkable achievement — a complete remission of the active cancerous lesions. Bolstered by this progress, Mrs. Kaur underwent a successful surgery known as a modified Radical mastectomy. Pathological examination post-surgery confirmed a complete response to the treatment, further underscoring the positive impact of the medical interventions.

Commenting on the successful surgery, Dr Neeraj Bishnoi, Regional COO, AOI, said "At American Oncology Institute (AOI), we are committed to delivering the highest level of care. Mrs. Kaur's case is a testament to our team's expertise and our focus on patient-centric solutions. Every success story reinforces our resolve to provide personalized and effective treatments that empower our patients on their journey to recovery."

Mrs. Kaur continued her path to recovery with adjuvant chemo-radiotherapy and received ongoing maintenance therapy tailored to HER2 receptors. Her dedication to her health, combined with the comprehensive care provided by American Oncology Institute, has led to her current state of remission.

This success story echoes the positive impact of early detection through screening mammography and the availability of advanced treatment options. American Oncology Institute's holistic approach to patient care, combining cutting-edge medical interventions with compassionate support, has paved the way for stories of triumph like Mrs. Kaur's.
