Jalandhar, 20th Nov 2023: American Oncology Institute (AOI) Jalandhar proudly announces the successful story of a 90-year-old male patient who achieved complete remission from Multiple Myeloma with advance stage under the expert care of the oncology team.
The patient was admitted to the emergency department presenting with decreased urine output and generalized body swelling persisting for several days. Upon evaluation, he was diagnosed with acute renal failure along with high calcium levels and metabolic acidosis. Under the proficient care of AOI’s medical team, which included three sessions of Hemodialysis and meticulous supportive management, the patient's condition stabilized.
Further investigations led to the diagnosis of Multiple Myeloma (Stage IIIB). Despite initial reluctance from the patient's attendants due to the age and health condition, comprehensive discussions and motivational counselling resulted in the initiation of chemotherapy alongside maintenance dialysis.
Dr Burhan Wani, Senior Consultant, Medical Oncology, AOI Jalandhar emphasized, "risk for multiple myeloma (MM) increases as you age. In fact, 35% of the patients are diagnosed at age 75 or older, including 10% who are 85 or older. Multiple Myeloma in elderly patients presents unique challenges. However, age should not hinder the pursuit of optimal treatment. This case highlights the significance of tailored care plans and the impact they can have on achieving favourable outcomes, even in older individuals."
After four weeks of treatment, the patient exhibited significant improvement in renal functions, leading to the discontinuation of dialysis. Continuing with chemotherapy for an additional two months, subsequent blood investigations revealed complete remission of the disease. The patient was then transitioned to oral chemotherapy drugs, marking the beginning of a new chapter in his life.
