Jammu, 14th Aug 2023: American Oncology Institute (AOI) at ASCOMS Jammu has once again demonstrated its exceptional expertise in the field of oncology by successfully performing a rare and complex Uro-oncological surgery. The surgery was led by Dr Avinash Rajra, Dr Sujeet Bhat and the surgical oncology team at AOI Jammu along with the anesthesia team, under the leadership of Dr Atul Sharma and Dr Khurram Malik, played a crucial role in ensuring the patient's comfort and safety throughout the surgery.
The patient was diagnosed with urothelial carcinoma of the urinary bladder at another hospital, was referred to AOI Jammu for further management. Urothelial carcinoma (also called transitional cell carcinoma) is cancer that begins in the urothelial cells, which line the urethra, bladder, ureters, renal pelvis, and some other organs. Almost all bladder cancers are urothelial carcinomas.
It was initially treated with chemotherapy by Dr Satyankar Gupta due to its invasive nature. Subsequently, the surgical oncology team at AOI Jammu successfully executed a complex surgery, involving the complete removal of the urinary bladder and prostate. The surgical technique employed modern approaches for tumor resection and reconstruction, leading to the patient's successful recovery.
