Jammu, July 26, 2023 The American Oncology Institute (AOI) in Jammu, has achieved a significant milestone by successfully treating a massive retroperitoneal sarcoma in a 59-year-old male. The surgical team, led by Dr Sujeet Bhat, Consultant Surgical Oncology, Dr Avinash Rajra, Consultant Surgical Oncology, along with the anaesthesia team under Dr Atul Sharma and Dr Khurram Malik, performed a laparotomy and surgical excision of a 30x20x10 cm retroperitoneal mass which lasted for about 7 hours.
The 59-year-old male patient, hailing from the remote area of Bhaderwah, approached AOI Jammu with complaints of abdominal distention persisting over several months. Having previously sought medical evaluation at another center without a conclusive diagnosis, the patient turned to AOI Jammu for further examination and treatment. After thorough investigations, it was revealed that the patient harboured an enormous tumor within the abdominal cavity, spanning from the liver to the urinary bladder, occupying more than half of the available space. After undergoing two cycles of chemotherapy, the patient's condition was accurately diagnosed, leading to the decision to proceed with surgery.
Sharing details of the case, Dr Sujeet Bhat, Consultant Surgical Oncology said, “The surgical procedure posed significant challenges due to the immense size of the tumor, measuring approximately 30x20x10 cm, which had adhered to the intestines and was in close proximity to major blood vessels in the abdomen. The tumor was successfully excised with minimal blood loss. Following a successful operation, the patient was discharged after a five-day hospital stay.
