Vijayawada, 20th Sept 2023 – American Oncology Institute (AOI) Mangalagiri in Vijayawada successfully treated a metastatic leiomyosarcoma in the lower lobe of the left lung. Leiomyosarcoma, or LMS, is a type of rare cancer that grows in the smooth muscles. The smooth muscles are in the hollow organs of the body, including the intestines, stomach, bladder, and blood vessels. In females, there is also smooth muscle in the uterus.

The treatment was started with four cycles of chemotherapy, followed by a thorough re-evaluation through PET CT scans. Encouragingly, the results indicated an exceptional response to chemotherapy, with no evidence of disease at any other site. But, because there were issues with the heart valves and a narrowed aorta, this case was considered risky. The dedicated medical team at AOI Mangalagiri conducted extensive preoperative evaluations, meticulously assessing the patient's condition.

Dr Kalyan Polavarapu remarked, "This success story is a collaborative effort of the entire medical team at AOI Mangalagiri. Our patient's recovery was expedited due to the employment of minimally invasive surgical techniques, which minimized intraoperative blood loss and postoperative pain. The ability to perform incentive spirometry from day one post-surgery resulted in optimal expansion of the remaining left lung, reducing the risk of postoperative infections."

After the assessments, Mr. Gunasekhar underwent VATS (Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery) Lower Lobectomy of the left lung under general anaesthesia. His postoperative recovery was exceptionally smooth, marked by the removal of the Intercostal Drain (ICD) on the 5th postoperative day, and discharge on the 8th postoperative day.

Mr. Mahendra Reddy, Regional Chief Operating Officer (RCOO) of AOI, expressed his delight, stating, "AOI remains steadfast in its commitment to providing precision cancer care, even in the most challenging cases. This successful outcome underscores our dedication to innovation and excellence in oncological care."
