As the case was critical, it was immediately presented at the Multidisciplinary Tumour Board to review, discuss and devise out the treatment options.

Raghavan (name changed), an ex-military officer with an history of excessive smoking and hailing from Calicut, was referred to Dr Midhun Murali, MD, Radiation Oncology, AOI, Calicut with a complaint of difficulty in swallowing food and weight loss of 2 months duration. After a thorough evaluation and investigation, the patient was diagnosed with carcinoma hypopharynx stage IVA.

Elaborating on the procedure, Dr Midhun Murali, MD, Radiation Oncology, AOI said, “The patient received external beam radiotherapy with an advanced technique called Rapid Arc to the hypopharynx and neck along with chemotherapy for six cycles. He had a complete clinical and radiological response on response evaluation and is on follow-up since. Hypopharyngeal and other cancers in the head and neck region are common in our country due to the increased use of tobacco either as smoking or chewing. Cancers in this part of the body can be very deadly because they affect the ability of patients to eat properly, so patient loses a lot of weight and deteriorates rapidly. Such cancers can be treated with excellent results if these are diagnosed at an early stage.”

Dr Midhun urges to, “quit smoking or any other form of tobacco use as it is the single-most important risk factor for such cancers. AOI is backed by the latest technology, centralized radiation treatment planning, and international standard cancer treatment protocols to ensure a holistic precision cancer care approach for the patients’ well-being.”

The patient was extremely anxious at the time of his diagnosis as the treatment was extremely difficult for his body and mind, but he eventually accepted it with a positive attitude. Post treatment, he regained confidence and went back to his previous day to day activities.

Mr Faisal Siddiqui, Chief Operating Officer – Processes, CTSI, South Asia, said, "At AOI, we discuss patient care at local and international tumour boards on a weekly basis to ensure that best-in-class treatment protocols are followed in each case.
