FAQ's

A bone marrow transplant (BMT), or hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT), is a medical procedure used to treat certain types of cancers, such as leukemia, myeloma, lymphoma, and other blood and immune system diseases that affect bone marrow.

Bone marrow is the spongy tissue found inside bones, it contains stem cells which are immature & pluripotent stem cells that can potentially produce any cell or tissue.

A blood or marrow transplant (BMT) replaces unhealthy or diseased blood-forming cells with healthy ones in the marrow.

Patients undergoing BMT need to be carefully evaluated and monitored by a team of experienced healthcare professionals. The success and outcome of the transplant depend on various factors, such as the patient's condition, the source of the stem cells, the degree of compatibility between donor and recipient, and the level of post-transplant care provided.

BMT unit at AOI is present in Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Imphal and Nagpur

1. Autologous Bone Marrow Transplant - uses blood-forming cells from the patient’s own Bone Marrow.

2. Allogeneic Bone Marrow Transplant- uses blood-forming cells donated by someone else from blood relation (Related Donor) or other (Unrelated Donor)

Undergoing a Bone Marrow Transplant is a five-stage process

  • Preparation
  • Conditioning
  • Stem Cell Harvesting
  • Infusion
  • Recovery

There are many benefits associated with a bone marrow transplant:

  • Cure for underlying cancer
  • Establishing normal hematopoiesis
  • Primary immune deficiency (PID) – Restoring normal immune function
