How do you recover post bone marrow transplant?
After undergoing a bone marrow transplant, a patient will need close monitoring and supervision to ensure that there is no infection and that the treatment is effective. Blood tests, blood transfusions and hospital stays maybe required as well. Once the bone marrow can produce enough healthy blood cells, the patient is discharged.
Post transplant, diet will need to be adjusted to prevent weight gain. Fruits; whole grains; lean meats, poultry, and fish; legumes; and healthy fats, such as olive oil are usually advised along with restricted salt intake.
Consumption of alcohol and smoking are to be prohibited, lifelong. Physical activity is very important; however, the pace should be picked up gradually.
Sometimes patients have anxieties pertaining to the transplant. In such cases, it is imperative that they go for counselling or join a support group. This will help them in working through their fears and have a positive outlook, which will only support the recovery process.
