Side effects of BMT
As mentioned above, bone marrow transplant is a complex procedure. Therefore, there are certain risks and side-effects associated with the procedure.
These side-effects generally depend on the disease for which the transplant is needed, its intensity, the overall health of the patient, their age, etc.
Possible complications post-transplant includes graft failure, infection, organ damage, infertility, new cancers, etc. Besides, some of the typical side-effects of bone marrow transplant may include:
- Bleeding problems
- Diarrhea
- Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). This is common if you get stem cells from a donor instead of using your own.
- Infections
- Sores in your mouth
- Stomach upset and vomiting
- Feeling tired and fatigued
