Medical oncology is a specialty that deals with the diagnosis, staging and treatment of cancer through various types of medications or substances using chemotherapy, immunotherapy, hormonal therapy and targeted therapy. Treatment for most of the cancers involves coordination of Medical Oncology with Surgical Oncology or Radiation Oncology to give the best clinical outcomes.

Medical Oncology involves administration of specialized medications or substances which act on the cancer cells in many ways to destroy them and prevent their multiplication within the body. The term, ‘Chemotherapy’ is composed of two words – ‘chemo’ (substance/chemical/medicines) & ‘therapy’ (treatment) i.e., medicines used to treat cancer.
