Skin Cancers

Bringing you comprehensive information about different types of Skin Cancers

AOI > Cancer Types > Skin Cancer

Skin Cancer

Skin cancers result in abnormal growth of the skin cells and are largely categorized as three primary forms – basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma. Exposure to sun and radiation is one of the most common causes of skin cancers. Skin cancers can be prevented by limiting exposure to the sun, and UV radiation, while early detection also aids improved treatment outcomes.

Basal cell carcinoma

Basal cell carcinoma begins in the basal cells of the skin, which are essentially replacing the cells that grow old and die. This form of cancer largely develops on the sun-exposed parts of your body, especially your head and neck. However, in rare cases it is also found in the areas protected from the sun, such as the genitals.

Squamous cell carcinoma

Squamous cell carcinoma of the skin is a common form of skin cancer, and although it can be quite an aggressive form, it is not considered to be a life-threatening condition. In most cases, the cancers develop due to excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Given that squamous cells are found in many places on the body, the cancer can develop anywhere they are found.

Melanoma

Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer and develops in the melanocytes – the type of cells producing melanin. While the exact cause of the cancer is yet unascertained, exposure to UV radiation is one of the factors. Melanomas can develop anywhere on your body. They most often develop in areas that have had exposure to the sun, such as your back, legs, arms and face.
