Mangalagiri, 08th Oct 2024: A 47-year-old man diagnosed with recurrent laryngeal cancer (cancer of the voice box) received successful treatment at American Oncology Institute (AOI) in Mangalagiri, Vijayawada. The surgery was expertly performed by Dr Eshant Inapuri and his team at AOI, representing a significant milestone in Cancer Care. This patient presented with several health complications, including a high cardiac risk and significant fibrosis in the neck, affecting muscles, nerves, blood vessels, and potentially the voice box, a consequence of prior radiation therapy. He underwent a complex salvage total laryngectomy, which involved the removal of the voice box, along with a bilateral functional neck dissection to excise lymph nodes and surrounding tissues from both sides of the neck.
The patient, Mr. Samba Siva Rao, had previously undergone a full course of chemoradiotherapy eight months prior. With recurrence and a highly complex condition, the medical team performed the salvage surgery. This surgery included using a piece of muscle and skin from the chest to cover the front part of the throat. Additionally, they created a permanent opening in the neck for breathing and set up a feeding tube in the small intestine. Post-operative recovery was smooth, and 40 days after surgery, the patient’s wound has healed completely. A voice prosthesis procedure is planned in six months to help restore speech function.
Harish Trivedi, CEO, CTSI – South Asia, commented on this milestone, stating, "This case exemplifies AOI's commitment to delivering world-class, multidisciplinary Cancer Care even in the most challenging of cases. Our team’s dedication to providing personalized, advanced treatments continues to make a profound impact on the lives of our patients, and I am proud of their efforts in setting new benchmarks in oncology treatment."
Mahendra Reddy, Regional Chief Operating Officer at AOI Mangalagiri, added, "This successful surgery is a testament to the cutting-edge capabilities of AOI Mangalagiri. The seamless collaboration between our surgical, oncology, and critical care teams enabled us to navigate the complex medical and surgical challenges involved in this case. We will continue our mission to provide compassionate care and clinical excellence to all our patients."
Dr Eshant Inapuri, Surgical Oncologist, shared insights into the complexities of the procedure, saying, "This was an extremely high-risk case, not only due to the recurrence of the tumor but also the patient’s compromised heart function and extensive neck fibrosis. However, through meticulous planning and teamwork, we were able to achieve a successful outcome. We are optimistic about his recovery and look forward to fitting a voice prosthesis in six months to improve his quality of life."
This success story highlights AOI Mangalagiri’s expertise in handling complex cancer cases with a holistic approach, ensuring the best possible outcomes for patients.
