    Gastrointestinal Cancers

Gastrointestinal cancers are common across the world. But the treatments are more effective only when the cancer is detected at an early stage—which, unfortunately, can be a challenge sometimes.

Some of the commonly found gastrointestinal cancers include stomach cancer, esophageal cancer, colorectal cancer, and liver cancer, etc.

When the tumor is easy to reach, it is to be treated by surgical removal. At AOI, the best robotic surgery hospital, treatment of gastrointestinal cancers is usually done with the aid of the latest and most advanced robotic surgery. The minimally invasive approach offers our patients improved clinical outcomes without compromising the oncologic efficacy of the operations in comparison to the open approach. Also, minimizing surgical trauma is imperative to the goals of long-term survival and quality of life for our gastric cancer patients.

    Stomach Cancer

The most common type of gastrointestinal cancer is stomach cancer. Robotic surgery is one of the latest and most effective treatment options for this cancer type. It offers enhanced level of operative precision, besides a number of other potential advantages to patients whose stomach cancer treatment plans include surgery.

At AOI, we use the da Vinci – X Surgical System to assist the following types of robotic stomach cancer surgery:

    • Total gastrectomy
    • Partial gastrectomy
    • Wedge gastric resection
    • Transgastric tumor resection

Unlike what it may sound, robotic surgery is not performed by a robot. Instead, our team of highly experienced and top robotic surgeons for stomach cancer perform the minimally invasive surgery using a computerized console to control a corresponding set of robotic tools. For many cancer patients, robotic-assisted surgery translates to a better surgical outcome and a higher quality of life – especially when used as a part of a comprehensive treatment plan.

    Robotic Esophageal Cancer Surgeries (VATS)

The incidence of cancer of esophagus is on rise these days. Esophageal cancer usually presents with difficulty in swallowing, initially to solids and then gradually to liquids.

Sometimes, patients may also experience voice change or bouts of coughing on swallowing due to complications.

The treatment for esophageal cancer consists of surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, used in combination (multi-modal treatment). And for early tumors, complete surgical removal can often provide cure.

Conventionally, removal of esophagus, called as Esophagectomy is carried out through the chest. But, at AOI, we have developed the expertise to perform even better cancer operation by VATS (Key-hole) or Robotic method. We offer world-class Esophagectomy using the da Vinci X Robotic surgical system.

Robot-assisted surgery offers multiple benefits to both patients as well as surgeons. It helps the surgeon in being more precise thereby, performing a more accurate surgery with lesser blood loss. And for patients, the surgery is less painful, which means faster recovery and better cosmetic results with improved quality of life.

    Colorectal Cancer

Colorectal cancer, as the name suggests starts either in the lining of the colon or the rectum. When diagnosed early, the condition is highly curable.

The treatment involves the removal of cancerous portions of the colon and rectum, as well as benign tumors and polyps. At AOI, the best robotic surgery cancer hospital, we perform colon and rectal surgeries using the world’s most advanced robot- da Vinci X surgical system.

The approach provides surgeons with the tools that easily connect the two ends of the colon after cancer has been removed. Also, the technique provides improved ergonomics and optics for the operating surgeon due to the unique wristed instruments.

For rectal cancer specifically, the robot allows for a finer dissection of the rectum out of the tight space where it is located. The procedure can be executed with few tiny incisions, rather than the one long incision as used in traditional open colon surgery.

At AOI, we offer robotic colorectal surgery as a treatment option for the following conditions:

    • Colon cancer
      • Rectal cancer
      • Inflammatory bowel disease
    • Trans-anal conditions
      • Rectal prolapse
      • Multivisceral surgery (multiple organ system) for cancer and pelvic organ/rectal prolapse, as part of combined surgery with Urology and Gynecology.

    Scarless Robotic Thyroidectomy

Scarless Thyroidectomy is a new minimally invasive robotic surgery performed to remove some or all of the thyroid gland without leaving any scar in the neck.

A thyroidectomy is a surgery where either a part of, or all of a diseased thyroid is removed. The thyroid glad is a small butterfly shaped gland that releases hormones that regulate the metabolic activity in the body and a thyroidectomy is used to treat some disorders of the thyroid, such as cancers, enlargement (known as a goiter) and sometimes a hyperactive thyroid.

A thyroidectomy can include partial or complete removal of the thyroid gland, depending on the condition and its severity.

Most people who need thyroid surgery are candidates for scarless thyroidectomy. However, the surgery works best in case of certain parameters such as having a thyroid gland that is smaller than 4 cm, nodules that are on only one side of the thyroid gland, etc.

The scarless robotic thyroidectomy uses a state-of-the-art robotic technology for treating thyroid nodules and thyroid cancers. In the case of a ‘scarless surgery’, an incision is made in the armpit of the patient and the thyroid gland is removed through this.

The advanced technique allows for the entire surgery to be done through one single incision rather than two and that too with zero scars in the neck.

The technique is particularly advantageous because this means quicker recovery period, shorter stay in the hospital and less time away from the routine.
