How do you recover post renal cancer treatment?
Completing cancer treatment can get stressful for many patients as it’s hard not to worry about cancer coming back. For some people, kidney cancer might never go away completely as they may have to be on regular treatment for the rest of their lives to keep cancer in check. So if cancer can get physically exhausting, it can drain you emotionally and psychologically as well. Managing all of these effects is called palliative care or supportive care and it is an important part of your care that is included along with treatments intended to slow, stop, or eliminate cancer.
Palliative care works best when it is started right after a cancer diagnosis. Usually, patients who are on palliative care experience less severe symptoms and are able to live a quality of life. Palliative treatments often include medication, nutritional changes, emotional support, and other therapies. Patients may also receive palliative treatments similar to those meant to get rid of cancer, such as surgery or radiation therapy.
Before treatment begins, it’s important to explore palliative care options besides discussing the treatment plan.
That said, the recovery period after kidney cancer surgery varies and depends on various factors like the patient’s overall health, disease profile, and follow-up care. It may take one week to several weeks to recover.
Follow-up Care
Even if you have successfully completed your cancer treatment, your doctor will still suggest you to be regular with your follow-up visits and post-treatment therapies and medications. It’s during these visits when your doctors ask you about any problems and may prescribe some regular tests to look for signs of cancer or treatment side effects.
In people with early-stage cancer, doctors generally recommend follow-up visits and diagnostic exams every 12 months whereas for people who were treated for later-stage cancers, follow-up visits with imaging and lab tests are more frequent and at short intervals.
If you experience any side effects or any signs of cancer coming back, It’s very important to let your doctor know during these visits.
