The treatment through radiation therapy has the following steps:

  • Simulation: This is a type of rehearsal done by radiation oncologists before delivering the actual treatment. It involves the use of imaging techniques, such as CT scan, MRI, and X-ray, to determine the size and location of the tumor.
  • Appropriate positioning: The patient is positioned in a way that the radiation is directly guided on the tumor with minimal damage to the healthy tissues.
  • Delivering the radiation therapy: Radiation therapy may be delivered through external beam radiation therapy or brachytherapy. External beam radiation therapy involves guiding the radiation on the tumor from a machine present outside the body. Brachytherapy involves placing the seeds containing radioactive material into or near the tumor site to kill the cancer cells.
