Bile Duct Cancer

Palliative therapies for bile duct cancer include medications to treat pain, nausea, and vomiting, surgery for inserting a biliary stent or biliary catheter to remove the blockage from the bile duct, tumor ablation through cryosurgery or radiofrequency ablation, photodynamic therapy, and alcohol injection (to relieve pain).

Types of bile duct cancer are:

  • Hilar cholangiocarcinoma: It occurs in the bile ducts present just outside the liver.
  • Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma: It occurs in the bile ducts that are present inside the liver.
  • Distal cholangiocarcinoma: It occurs in the bile ducts that are present near the small intestine.
