Risk factors for bile duct cancer are:

  • Congenital bile duct disorders, such as presence of choledochal cyst
  • Underlying medical conditions, such as diabetes, parasitic infection (liver fluke infection), chronic liver disease, liver cirrhosis, inflammatory bowel disease, hepatitis B or C, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, chronic ulcerative colitis, primary sclerosing cholangitis, and inherited conditions like Lynch syndrome and cystic fibrosis
  • Advanced age (>50 years)
  • Smoking
