Tongue cancer, a type of head and neck cancer, starts in the cells of the tongue. It can occur on the front of the tongue, which is called ‘oral tongue cancer’ or at the base of the tongue, where it attaches to the bottom of your mouth, called ‘oropharyngeal cancer’.

The major risk factors for tongue cancer include alcohol consumption, smoking, and human papillomavirus infection. Tongue cancer causes pain, numbness, difficulty speaking and swallowing, and reduces the overall quality of life.
