Risk Factors

Factors that increase the risk of multiple myeloma include:

  • Increased age (above 60)
  • Black African ethnicity
  • Men have an increased risk of developing myeloma
  • A family history of multiple myeloma
  • Underlying inflammatory conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis
  • Exposure to toxic chemicals and radiation
  • Being overweight or obese
