Certain factors increase the risk of nasopharyngeal cancer. These are:

  • Infection with Epstein-Barr virus
  • Eating salt-cured foods
  • Heavy consumption of alcohol and smoking
  • Age between 30 and 50 years
  • Ethnicity, as people of Southeast Asia, northern Africa, and Southern China are at increased risk for nasopharyngeal cancer
  • Men are at increased risk for nasopharyngeal cancer
  • A family history of nasopharyngeal cancer
