Oesophageal cancer diagnosis is based upon identification of characteristic symptoms, a detailed patient history, a thorough clinical evaluation and a variety of specialized tests.
The symptoms may vary from feeling that food is stuck in the throat or the chest, to experiencing pain in the middle of the chest that feels like pressure or burning. This discomfort can often be confused with other problems, such as heartburn.
Esophageal cancer diagnosis is usually confirmed by a biopsy, in which a small piece of tissue is taken to identify if those cells are cancerous. But before that, upon examining a patient, the doctor may ask about patients’ history and learn about the symptoms.
However, if the doctor suspects it to be esophageal cancer, he may further suggest some confirmatory tests which include esophageal cancer radiology, blood tests, imaging tests and biopsies.
