The types of anal cancer include squamous cell carcinoma (in the outer lining of the anal canal), adenocarcinoma (in glands present in the anal lining), cloacogenic carcinoma (in the cloacal membrane), melanoma (in the color-producing cells in the anal canal), and basal cell carcinoma (in the skin of perianal area).

The complications of anal cancer treatment include proctitis, radiation side effects, such as diarrhea, skin irritation, and alteration in skin color; chemotherapy side effects, such as nausea and vomiting, hair loss, and oral sores; surgical complications, such as wound infection, fistula, and strictures; rectal bleeding, bowel dysfunction, and reduced libido.
